What makes a welding fixture | WPI Intelligent Planetary Rover

Many of the rover’s assemblies require tight tolerance weldments in order to meet design requirements.  In order to help Jake Cutler of Barnstorm Cycles weld these components, we have designed several weld fixtures to help control their position and orientation.  The latest fixture we have designed is for the welding of the rocker pivot assembly.  In this particular weldment, two aluminum tube sockets must be positioned around a central bearing assembly, with each socket at an 8.5° angle from the horizontal.  Additionally, another component is welded to the bearing assembly to form a bell crank for the rocker linkage.  The fixture we have designed clamps the tube sockets with plates fit into their open ends, and supports the bell crank with a bolt and standoff.
