Zelda Kaplan, Nightlife Fixture, Dies During Fashion Week - RIP ...

Nightlife fixture Zelda Kaplan died in the middle of Joanna Mastroianni’s Fashion Week show yesterday afternoon at Lincoln Center. She collapsed in the middle of the presentation and was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The 95 year-old Kaplan was a fixture at clubs and parties, and came to prominence at the old Bungalow 8 and Lotus, where she could be found dancing and talking with her younger cohorts until the wee hours of the morning.

She had formerly been a ballroom dance instructor and spent her non clubbing hours raising awareness to women's issues in Africa, and was the subject of the 2003 HBO documentary, "Her Name Is Zelda". Zelda once said, "I want to be an example for young people so they aren't afraid of growing old and a lesson to old people that you can be productive. You don't have to sit around and wait for death," and she went out living her life like that.
