Choosing the Right Light Fixture | Musings of a Mom

Before we moved into our house (9 years ago) we didn’t have an interior designer to advise us on what kind of light fixtures to put up, or how our living room could be maximized or how our kitchen should be done etc. You get the drift.  We didn’t have much money and we just made do with our ‘ID’ skills. Fast forward 8 years later, we decided to renovate our house and give our house a face light since property prices are a killer these days and we know we can’t afford to buy another house within this area – unless we move out of town!  So when given lemons, make lemonade right? Roight!

So we decided to change the light fixtures as well since they were outdated. So off we went light hunting…and I also scoured the internet to do some research on home light fixtures from iLightingSource.com . So far, we only managed to change the light fixtures in 2 of our bedrooms. We still have lots to do….Our current objective is to replace the light fixture above our dining table.

I’m thinking we should have one with a bit of an oooomph to it. A mini chandelier perhaps? Our current one is a simple and mini pendant lamp from Ikea. Much too traditional,  modest and very just-graduated-and-I-bought-my-first-house-ish type of light I’d say. Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with the just-graduated-and-I-bought-my-first-house-ish kinda light fixtures but change is a constant. I.Need.A.Change.

There are some really good shopping tips for ceiling fixtures in the iLightingSouce.com website.

I like  Crystorama Sutton Mini Chandelier (and many others) !  It looks vintage-ish and yet romantic.  You know how when you see too much of everything and your mind goes blank?  Ya so you know how we feel…Decisions Decisions.

And THEN! There’s Pinterest! Don’t even get me started…..

No matter how much research and over analysis that we do, we’d never know it’s the right choice until we bite the bullet and JUST.DO.IT. It happens to us most of the time. I guess we should exercise that in this case.

Here’s a tip I never considered…

1. A mini chandelier centered over an informal dining table will illuminate the entire table with as little as 200 watts. A chandelier should be installed 30 inches above the table to allow adequate headroom, and should measure a foot less than the width of the table.

Ahhhh …*lightbulb moment*. I never knew that :)
