How To Install And Wire A Light Fixture Safely? | Momoko Harada

Installing and wiring light fixtures are two tasks that aren’t that challenging to do with the help of some businesses that handle this such as The Electrical Guy who provides electrical services. It is, however, dangerous if not done correctly. Not surprisingly, electricity is a part of this activity. That’s why installing and wiring any light fixture should be done with utmost caution. It’s never a good idea to take risks around electricity. Below are a few easy steps and tips on how to install and wire a light fixture.

Safety with Electricity: Step One
The first thing you should do is to shut off the electric current. Turning the lights off doesn’t mean that the power is truly off. There most likely will be residual electricity left and this may cause problems. The best way is to turn off the electrical flow from your circuit breaker. However, there are instances when it is not possible to completely turn the circuit off breaker because electricity is needed in some parts of the home. When this occurs, be sure to turn off the switch and keep it in position with a masking tape or an electrical tape. This prevents other people from accidentally flipping on the switch.

The Various Tools You’ll Need

Before proceeding to the actual installation and wiring, you should have the required tools on hand like screwdrivers, pliers and wire strippers. These tools should ideally be in your tool set. However, if you don’t have them, it’s best to obtain them before you start the task.

Screwdriver. For this task a flat tip or Phillips tip or both may be required. A flat tip is very useful in extracting old screws in the existing fixture. A Phillips tip, on the other hand, is great for putting in new screws.

Pliers. Usually required to tighten the support on the nuts and bolts that hold the fixture in place.

Wire Stripper. A wire stripper is necessary when installing wires to a new fixture. However, it’s not always needed if you’re going to replace an old, existing fixture.

Removal and Installation: The Actual Work

The actual work starts with taking out the existing fixture you have. Remove first the bulbs and any glass ornaments. You do not want them falling off while handling your light fixture. Loosen the screws and remove the electrical ceiling box. Carefully detach the fixtures wires with the ceilings wires. Set-up the new fixture and make certain that the wires go to the correct places. Again, examine the wires if they are in any way damaged or burned. If they are, stop the installation and fix the wires first.

This really is a tricky and risky job and there are people who simply do not have the knack when it comes to electronics. If you are one of those people, it would be smart to call an electrical company and avail their electrical services. Or you can hire an independent electrician or electrical contractor to do the job for you. Not only are you assured of you and your familys safety, but you are assured that the work is done in the best possible way.
