Taibach triumph in friendly fixture | Port Talbot MagNet

Maesteg Celtic 13, Taibach 18

IN a friendly fixture arranged in response to Swalec cup, plate and bowl fixtures, it was Celtic who applied the early pressure, using their bigger pack to advantage - and they took the lead with a drive from a lineout. Flanker Steve Williams touched down and outside half Nathan Healy converted.

Healey then kicked a penalty for a 10-0 lead.

After weathering the early storm, Taibach reduced the deficit with a penalty from outside half Aaron Jones. Then, on the half hour, Taibach won a lineout 10 metres out, and although driven back, the pack regathered and second row Chris Hunt broke away and brushed off would-be tacklers to run over and cross for a try.

Aaron Jones converted to level the score at 10-10, and then kicked a penalty, for a Taibach lead of 10-13.

On the stroke of halftime, Nathan Healey kicked his second penalty to level the scores again at 13-13.

From the second-half kick off, Taibach full back Richard Hopkins made a break in his twenty-two and Gareth Williams, Leigh Jenkins and Craig Whelan continued the move before Leigh Jenkins was returned the ball from Whelan and sprinted away to score.

The remainder of the game was end-to-end, but neither side could score. Taibach missed out on at least three further tries, thanks to minor infringements, but they ran out winners by 13 points to 18.
