How to get the right sized Light Fixture

by Karen Davis on April 12, 2012

Here are few tips on how to get the right sized light fixture.

The easiest way to figure out the right size  for a room is measuring the room itself. You will need both the length and the width of the room, which you’ll add together to get an approximate diameter for the light fixture itself. So if your room is 12ft x 15ft then it would 27” diameter.

For height off of a table it would anywhere from 30” – 40” off the table. It is preference and what you want the focal point to be the light fixture or something else like artwork.

In a large master bedroom I generally like to measure the space around the bed area not the whole room like sitting areas.

For kitchen islands, treat them like a room for the diameter and the height should be your choice what you feel is most comfortable. Using two or three lights is best for most islands. Two for smaller islands and three for larger and they should be spaced evenly from the middle of the island.
