A Cheap Light Fixture |

March 12, 2012 · 6:16 pm

In my laundry room I needed two light fixtures.  I had these ugly cheapo light fixtures that I needed to cover.

During my last trip to Ikea I found these:

source Ikea

They are these plastic, yet not plastic shades that are meant to be used for floor lamps (or the smaller size for table lamps)  I was intrigued by the $6.00 price tag.  So, I picked up two.  Really, I didn’t know how I would use them.  I figured I would cover it with fabric and make it a pendant or shade for a table lamp.

I got home and put it together:

I looked at my industrial light and thought, it could work.  There is a plastic ring that is attached (that you would screw on if it were a pendant)  I got rid of that plastic ring. I knew the metal ring would sit right on the light bulb so I didn’t want burning plastic.

I attached the shade by screwing in the light:

Voila, a cheap way to cover the light.  I didn’t worry about covering the bottom because you can’t see it unless you stand right under it and look up.

aaa

If you are near Ikea and need a cheap fix – grab a few of these.  I like the stark white in my laundry room but it sure would look cute covered with some fabric.

By the way, this weekend I took the time to work rehabbing this collapsible bowl.  My goal was to use things that I already had.  I wanted to make a drum lamp shade for my hallway light.

Well, with every 10 successes you will have a fail.  I tried using fabric stiffy to make the drum shade work.  It looked alright far away but there were a multitude of sins up close. (this pic does not show the imperfections that are really there)

but I had a hard time hanging the drum shade.  To make it work I had to purchase a smaller light fixture which would require me fixing the ceiling hole because it was a little bit bigger for the existing light fixture.  No thank you.  I saw a cheap project getting more expensive for something I didn’t love. My belief is a good rehabber knows when to throw in the towel.  So, last night, with a frustrated sigh…I threw in the towel.

Just keeping it real.  Off to Lowes to purchase some black paint.  Yep, my readers voted for the black frame around my bicycles…so black frame it is.

Thanks for reading,
